A moment in time

boys.jpg

I decided it was time to put together a quick montage of the boys (mostly because I need a new wallpaper for my monitor). I captured all three of these images this evening while we were attending Ian’s preschool carnival.

This is going to be a short post because it is late, I’m tired, and quite frankly I can’t think of a thing to say. Yeah, I know, imposter on Streams’ blog. Tonight I’ll let the picture talk for me. Hope you like it ;-)

Butterfly in the garden

Sunday, June 4th, 2006

Nathan found a butterfly in the back yard yesterday evening, so I grabbed the camera and my macro lens and tried to snap a few shots. Click on the picture to see five shots that I thought were good enough to post.

Hope you are all enjoying what’s left of your weekend.

Nathan’s last T-Ball game of the season today

Saturday, June 3rd, 2006

The weather decided to cooperate this weekend (at least thus far), so Nathan’s last T-ball game was quite a bit of fun. I took the camera and posted a bunch of pictures for you to enjoy. Click on the picture above to launch the slideshow.

Tonight is a low key evening at home. We grilled out some bratwurst and I’m still trying to list a bunch of stuff we don’t need on Craig’s list. I’ve managed to take pictures of stuff and put together three ads, so I guess that’s progress ;-) I keep hearing how amazing Craig’s list is, but I’ve listed on there several times and never had any success. Hopefully things will change this time around.

Memorial Day Weekend portraits of Erin and the Boys

Saturday, May 27th, 2006

Well it’s a rainy Memorial Day weekend, so I’m lucky we didn’t have any big plans ;-)

Given the crappy weather, I decided to ask Erin and the kids to put up with me again while I practiced taking portraits. I definitely feel like I am getting better at both taking pictures and finding ways to get the kids to cooperate. I posted some of the better ones on the web this evening. Pardon some of the cheesey poses. Just trying some different things out ;-)
Hope you all enjoy your holiday weekend.

Tulip festival pics from last weekend have arrived

Thursday, April 27th, 2006

I posted the pictures that we took last weekend on the photo site. You can access them here. Hope you enjoy them!

The Tulip Festival is held each year in Skagit county WA. It’s about an hour and a half drive from our place in Sammamish. This year it runs through the end of April, so those of you that are local still have this weekend to visit before they are beheaded, which reminds me of a slightly embarrassing story. A few years ago, my mom was out here visiting and we decided to drive up to the tulip festival. We drove around the area for at least a half hour before we realized that all of the tulips were gone. They had all been beheaded and we were left staring at acres upon acres of green headless tulips ;-) We did manage to find a nursery that had a modest garden full of tulips so that we could fire off a few pictures and not return completely empty handed, but it will still be many years before I live that trip down.

The current subject is powerful portraits. Here’s a link to my entries so far.

Must read book on photography

Sunday, March 26th, 2006

I’ve read quite a few books on photography and in terms of praticality and offering tips that you can use immediately, Bryan Peterson’s book “Understanding Exposure” is fantastic.

I was already familiar with fact that correct exposure is the result of matching shutter speed, aperture and ISO, but Bryan helps you to see that it is much more than that because technically every shot has many 5+ correct exposures (due to various combinations of M,A, ISO). The question is whether it is the right “creative” exposure.

You can easily make it through this book on a long flight or weekend. Highly recommended!

Cool Photoshop Tricks

Monday, February 6th, 2006

A while back, the furrygoat sent me a link to PanosFX. Panos has a number of freely downloadable actions for Photoshop ( I use CS2) that are out of this world. This tutorial covers how to use the PanosFX B&Big action combined with my own twist to produce the following image:
